Before you apply

  • Have your papers ready

Recent pay stubs or an offer letter, a photo ID, and your last landlord's contact. Self-employed? Bring bank statements or tax returns.

  • Expect a credit and background check

Most landlords run one for each adult. Ask what score they look for before you pay the application fee.

  • Read the deposit rules

In Texas the landlord has to return your security deposit, or list what was deducted, within 30 days after you move out and give a forwarding address.

  • Ask about extras

Pet deposits and monthly pet rent, parking, trash and water fees, and whether renter's insurance is required.
